Salzburg 2 – 2 Liverpool
Goals : Brewster x 2
Assists : Milner
FPL managers on the hunt for a playing £4.5m forward will now have their fingers firmly crossed that Rhian Brewster’s brace will not stop Liverpool from loaning him out to a fellow Premier League club this summer.
The 20 year-old took his pre-season tally to three goals in a blistering 28-minute appearance off the bench to salvage a draw for the Reds.
With both Manchester clubs blanking initially, the temptation to then start Brewster in our GW1 FPL sides whilst benching either a non-playing Man Utd or Man City attacker is potentially appealing should he continue to impress pre-season – this would help to save a free transfer further down the line.
With Brewster having now increased his appeal even further, all eyes will now be fixed firmly on the summer transfer window.
One other important point to note is that Trent Alexander-Arnold remained sidelined.
Wycombe Wanderers 1 – 5 West Ham Utd
Goals : Masuaku, own goal, Lanzini, Bowen x 2
Assists : Fornals, Bowen, Antonio, Masuaku
Budget defender Ben Johnson (£4m) started again, this time at right-back, in a 90-minute appearance against the Chairboys.
However, Ryan Fredericks appeared in neither squad so FPL managers ought to check Johnson’s playing time in future friendlies. Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) was the star player with two goals and one assist.
Ipswich Town 1 – 4 West Ham Utd
Goals : Haller x 3, Soucek
Assists : Diangana x 2, Coventry
Another Hammers side were in action simultaneously at Portman Road with surprise, surprise, a headed goal from Tomáš Souček (£5m), which further cements his status as the best budget midfielder in FPL.
The next “Fellaini” really doesn’t need opportunities in open play to find the net, which means that he could still return in tougher fixtures where West Ham may have to rely on set-pieces to score goals.
Although Haller grabbed a hattrick, Michail Antonio surely still holds the striker shirt following on from his strong end to last season.
Newcastle Utd 3 – 0 Crewe Alexandra 0
Goals : Carroll, Atsu, Fernández
Assists : Lascelles, Gayle, Barlaser
Dwight Gayle (£6m) limped off injured for the Magpies in a routine win over the Railwaymen.
Their centre-backs again proved that they are capable of nicking an attacking return, whilst there was no sign of midfielder Matt Ritchie (£5m).
Dundee Utd 0 -1 Sheffield Utd
Goal : Sharp
Assist : Berge
With this match being abandoned at half-time due to heavy rainfall, there was not too much to learn here.
Sharp missed a penalty before his goal after Sander Berge was fouled. Jack O’Connell, one of the three centre-backs who normally start, was not in the squad with Jack Robinson (£4.5m) deputising in his absence.
Crystal Palace 2 – 1 Oxford Utd
Goals : Zaha, McArthur
Assists : Schlupp
Budget defender Tyrick Mitchell (£4m) came on at left-back in the 20th minute after Oxford’s goal to keep a clean sheet. However, it remains to be seen if starting left-back Jairo Riedewald is ahead of him in the pecking order in the absence of the injured Patrick van Aanholt.
Riedewald moved into a defensive midfield role when Mitchell came on for the stricken James McCarthy and has been deployed there before.
In a further concern for FPL managers, the Eagles’ other £4m defender, Nathan Ferguson, failed to make the squad so hopefully his long recovery from a knee injury will end very soon in time for the new season.
Out of position (OOP) prospect Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m), classed as a midfielder by FPL, started up front for Palace and even missed a penalty in the second half after Jordan Ayew had gone off at half-time.
MK Dons 1 – 4 Arsenal
Goals : Elneny, Nketiah, McGuinness, Nelson (pen)
Assists : Saka, Nelson
The biggest takeway from this match was that new signing William Saliba (£4.5m) completed the first half to boost his hopes of being named in the GW1 line-up.
He will be way underpriced if he starts regularly in the league campaign and will simply rocket in value. The Gunners’ opening two fixtures are also very enticing with Fulham (away) followed by West Ham (home).
