Predicting the Dream Team – Fix vs. Texan (Gameweek 5)

Hello, and welcome to the 5th edition of this season’s Predicting the Dream Team brought to you by me, FPL Texan. In this article, we preview FPL Gameweek 5 of the 2021/2022 season.

In this series, I go head-to-head each week with Fantasy Football Fix to see who can select the best team of the week, their algorithm or myself. It is a classic battle of man vs. machine!

Let’s see who won last week’s matchup…

As you can see, I have won again this week to make it two in a row against the Algorithm!

The deciding pick was my selection of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who score 12 FPL points.

Moving on to Gameweek 5, let’s take a look at Fix’s team.

Fix’s Predicted Team of the Week

Please note that this team is accurate as of Thursday 16th September. However, the algorithm team updates right up until deadline with news from press conferences and potential injuries.

Therefore, to stay completely up to date with the algorithm team, you can check it yourself just before the deadline at FantasyFootballFix.com.

Next, we will look at my predicted team of the week, and reasonings behind each decision.

Texan’s Predicted Team of the Week

Important note before we begin – this is not my actual team for Gameweek 4, but instead my predicted team of the week (almost as though I had a free hit to choose as I wish).

ROBERT SANCHEZ

  • Price: £4.5m
  • Ownership: 25.4%
  • Projected Points: 4.0 Points

Sanchez is back in the team of the week this week with a matchup against Leicester. Leicester have been quite poor to start of the season, with the second lowest xG in the league through the first four games with only Watford lower. This bodes well for a solid Brighton defence with 2 clean sheets in their first four games, and rank 9th best in xGA.

Sanchez is not a save point magnet like other keepers, with just 7 saves this season.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

  • Price: £7.5m
  • Ownership: 35.0%
  • Projected Points: 6.0 Points

Liverpool face a Palace side with the 5th worst xG in the league to start the season at 3.9. Liverpool’s defence has looked good with the return of Van Dijk, ranking 7th best in xGA. Trent offers phenomenal attacking potential for a defender, ranking 2nd amongst defenders for xA per 90 at 0.51. He also leads defenders for attempted assists per 90 at 5.

Trent is in phenomenal form coming off a 12 FPL point performance, and I think another double digit haul could be on the cards this week at home against Palace.

LUKE SHAW

  • Price: £5.5m
  • Ownership: 43.5%
  • Projected Points: 3.2 Points

Shaw is also in the team of the week again this week with a matchup against West Ham. United have been a strong defence to start the season, with the 6th best xGA in the league. Antonio missing the game due to suspension is also a big boost to the United chances of a clean sheet this week. Shaw offers potential attacking returns too, ranking 3rd amongst defenders for xA per 90 at 0.24.

Shaw got on the score sheet last week with an assist, and I think he could get another one this week against West Ham.

NELSON SEMEDO

  • Price: £4.9m
  • Ownership: 2.8%
  • Projected Points: 4.6 Points

Semedo rounds out the defence this week. Wolves have been a very strong defence to start the season, ranking 4th best in the league for xGA, whilst Brentford have been a below average attacking team so far, with the 7th lowest xG. Semedo has also looked very attacking so far this season, ranking 2nd in xG per 90 amongst defenders in the league at 0.27.

Semedo has perhaps been unlucky not to get an attacking return so far this season, but I think that could change with a return this week against Brentford.

MOHAMED SALAH (C)

  • Price: £12.5m
  • Ownership: 54.5%
  • Projected Points: 6.6 Points

Salah starts out of the midfield this week. Liverpool have been in excellent attacking form, ranking first in the league this season in xG at 11.7, so a Liverpool triple up is a must in the team of the week when they are in this form. Salah has been performing very well, with the 4th best xG per 90 at 0.65 and 6th best xA per 90 at 0.36 amongst midfielders.

Salah and Liverpool are in great attacking form, and I expect that to continue against Palace this week so he’s my captain this week.

DIOGO JOTA

  • Price: £7.7m
  • Ownership: 20.8%
  • Projected Points: 5.6 Points

Jota rounds out my Liverpool triple up this week. As mentioned in the above Salah section, Liverpool are in great form offensively with the best xG in the league so far. Jota has been a major factor in their success, ranking 7th amongst midfielders in xG per 90 at 0.41. He also ranks 1st in xA per 90 at 0.48 showing that he is not just a goal scorer that he was more known for last season.

Jota was unlucky not to get a haul last week against Leeds, but I don’t think he will blank again this week against Palace.

RAPHINHA

  • Price: £6.5m
  • Ownership: 15.4%
  • Projected Points: 3.9 Points

Raphinha is back in the team of the week this week with a nice matchup against Newcastle. Newcastle have been poor defensively to start the season, with the worst xGA in the league at 9.1. Raphinha is a large part of Leeds’ success offensively, ranking 3rd on the team in xG per 90 at 0.23 and 4th on the team in xA per 90 at 0.11, leading the team in crosses per 90 at 6.50.

Raphinha and Leeds have had a slow start to the season, but I think they start to turn things around this week against Newcastle.

ILKAY GUNDOGAN

  • Price: £7.3m
  • Ownership: 5.3%
  • Projected Points: 5.4 Points

Gundogan makes his way into the team of the week with a matchup against a Southampton side that has been poor in defense, ranking 8th worst in xGA this season. City have been great in attack as you would expect, with the second best xG in the league this season behind Liverpool. Gundo has been putting up nice underlying stats so far this season, ranking 5th on the team in xG per 90 at 0.29 and second on the team in xA per 90 at 0.34.

Gundo got a rest midweek in the CL, so I think he will be fresh and ready to go against the Saints this weekend.

ISMAILA SARR

  • Price: £6.0m
  • Ownership: 5.3%
  • Projected Points: 4.8 Points

Sarr rounds out the midfield this week in the battle of newly promoted sides, Watford and Norwich. Norwich have been poor defensively, with the third worst xGA in the league. But in turn, Watford have been poor offensively with the worst xG in the league. Sarr has decent stats, ranking third on the team in both xG per 90 and xA per 90, but with the added bonus of probably being on pens I think he is an interesting option this week against Norwich.

Sarr and Watford have been in poor form offensively, but I think that he and Watford will get back on track against Norwich this week.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

  • Price: 12.6m
  • Ownership: 39.7%
  • Projected Points: 6.1 Points

Ronaldo is back in the team of the week again this week as United face West Ham. West Ham have been quite strong defensively to start the season, ranking 5th best in xGA, but have only kept one clean sheet to start the season. United have been in great form offensively ranking 7th best for xG, with Ronaldo making an instant impact on that with his brace last weekend, accumulating an xG of 1.49.

Ronaldo is back in the prem and scoring goals, so he’s a no brainer in the team of the week.

RAUL JIMENEZ

  • Price: £7.4m
  • Ownership: 4.4%
  • Projected Points: 3.5 Points

Jimenez rounds out the team of the week this week with a matchup against newly promoted Brentford. Brentford have been quite strong to open the season, with the second best xGA in the league trailing only City, but Wolves have been in great offensive form and have been unlucky so far with an xG of 6.3 but having only scored 2 goals. Jimenez looks back to his old self this season, ranking 4th on the team in xG at 0.21 and second in xA per 90 at 0.27.

Jimenez is yet to get on the scoresheet this season, but I think that could change this gameweek against Brentford.
